one worry about purchasing older vehicles is the distance from home that you find your buy sometimes. Found this site:
http://www.carchex.com/ and for about $100 they will go and inspect a vehicle and provide a detailed report of vehicle condition and report it back to you. could save a lot of time and hassle bacause you know how sellers like to leave out certian negative details and all. I sure wish I heard of these guys before i bought my truck!
