Old trucks are easy to maintain yourself, man.. thats the beauty of simplistic design.
If you've got a $70 Stanley Wal-Mart socket & wrench set, there's just about nothing you can't service on an old truck.
As mentioned before, oil leaks are common on these trucks, usually from the pan or the rear main seal. It's far easier and less expensive to find a mechanic to replace those seals and do the work than it would be for a new vehicle.. or even a 15 year old vehicle.
Buying an old truck is buying an old truck.. dosen't matter if it's 10 years old or 40. The upside to the 40+ year old trucks is that just about any shade tree mechanic can do the work.
