Andy,
If you take the "pump the gas into a coffee can" routine, make sure you have a little fire extinguisher or bucket of water around. Between leaking ignition stuff and hot spinning starters unplanned barbeque's and not fun.
These problems are usually a cause and effect situation. If there were issues with running out of gas, then the problem appears, that usually was the "cause" of the effect!
