Is your carb flooding? After you shut it off look down the throat. If any gas is dripping in you have a flooding problem & gas is building up around the trottle plate. It could be caused by a piece of dirt in the needle & seat or float level set to high. Check your float & make shure it does not have gas leaking into it.
