A couple other things I've been told, is that the windshield has to be installed TOP first, and the rope pulled down to the bottom. And the gasket has to be centered perfectly on the glass before install is attempted. My guy says the Steele gasket is softer and more pliable than the re pop gasket, and that is plainly evident in comparing the two side by side as I have done, and that is why he requires it. The Steele gasket is made in the USA.
www.steelerubber.com Also the new replacement windshields are made in Mexico and because they use a more modern, higher strength formula in the glass manufacturing process thay are a bit thinner than the fourty plus year old originals, again making them a bit easier to work with.(lighter and less prone to breakage during install)
Chevy got 'em off the line because they trained their people, and their people did one after the next for years in a row. Todays installers werent even born when these trucks came off the line, and most will admit to you they have never installed a piece of glass with that pronounced of a curve in it before. It is a mostly lost art.
Todays installers are used to installing tiny pieces of glass that are glued into the front of Honda civics, and the like, not much else.
You might try posting this in the Body and paint forum also. Someone there may be able to give a few more tips....
