It sounds to me like your 3/4 ton is a 4 speed. The rod should have a lever on the top. It is a reverse lock-out lever. If your 1/2 ton does not have one, it is a 3 speed.
I had the same question when I bought my 46. My 41 had a 3 speed...46 had a 4.
