Hi all
Well, due to a serious load of rust and sediment in my gas tank (1951 Chev. 3100 series), I've pulled the tank and will have it professionally cleaned and sealed.
When I pulled the sending unit out, it was covered with rust and crud and the float had a hole in it. My tank uses the shut off valve on the bottom of the tank, and has a 1/4" pipe plug in the bottom - probably a drain, right? The sending unit looks exactly like one pictured in the Bowtie Bits catalog, part # AD-545-GTSU, supposedly for the 1954-1955 models. It had a capped off fitting on the top that lead to a tube running down near the bottom of the tank.
On the same page of the same catalog, they show a sending unit (part #AD-473-GTSU) for the 1947-1953 models that does NOT have this tube, just a float assembly on an arm.
Anyone have a suggestion as to which I should order for a replacement? Am I perhaps missing a return line or something, or is that tube supposed to be a vent line or something? Any help appreciated, I'll be ordering the parts on Monday.
