My thought on extreme lowering is sort of a generation thing - the 'Hot Wheels' generation has grown up ans wants their vehicles to look like their 'toys when that were boys'.
Another mystery in my universe is the current 'Stagecoach' look with the big wheels and skinny spokes and tire.
