It's pretty simple. Many people like the way it looks. One could argue that it compromises safety but the same argument could also be made to point out that most of our trucks lack airbags, collapsible steering columns, abs brakes, seat belts ,shoulder restraints, etc. I think most (with a few exceptions) people who modify a vehicle they are riding in prefer it to be safe and drive the vehicle accordingly. The diversity of the hobby is the very thing that sparks most of our interests
