Painting is just as much just a surface treatment as varnish is. On top of that there are varnishes that are a heck of a lot harder than most paints and so offer more protection.
If the edges are properly coated before installation just do thin in between coats of either on a regular basis with the strips installed. A little masking tape goes a long way. JMO
