I finally used the "au contraire" method of adjusting the hood on my '48.

After several attempts of holding it down with a stack of firewood on it and tightening the bolts from inside the cab, I pressed the hood up against the hinges with a broom resting on the bumper. I then tightened the bolts on the inside. It worked pretty well.
