I had the same issue with my 56 when I was doing the refelting. I was able to salvage a few of the 'staples' by carefully prying up each pointed end of the staple. When installing the new felt the staples pierced thru well enough then I hammered them back down. Where I couldn't reuse the staples I used rivets. Worked OK.
