The flat metal sheet is seperate from the upholstry job. The upholstry is hog-ringed (mine had "u" clips) to the frame and the sheet metal is screwed in. I didn't have any upholstry on my seat when I got it so I'm not sure if the metal goes over or under the edge of the material.

The vent holes in also in my 56 seat. There's a metal frame that screws in over the rubber to hold it in place. I went to a garden pool place and bought a piece of the real thick pond liner rubber and cut that to fit and then sliced a slit down the center for the air escape hole.
