One trick the oldtimers used was to combine all their leftover paint into gallon cans- - - -not mixing lacquer and enamel, of course, and spray a thin coat of "scrap" paint once they thought their body work was done- - - -then wet sand with ultra-fine grit paper and a small sanding block. Any surface irregularities would show up quickly, and could be corrected before the finish coat was sprayed on. Scrap paint usually ended up being a really ugly green color, BTW!
