On the military taking plates out of Alaska, that's possible, but military doesn't need to get local state plates while stationed away from their home state. I didn't switch to Alaska plates till I got out since the ones from my home state were cheaper. The Soldiers' and Sailors' Civil Relief Act was enacted in 1940 with that provision.
