When I rebuilt the engine in my Pontiac Tempest, I didn't have to do the packing procedure with the brass rod. The manual just said to roll the seal into its slot and make sure there was plenty in there, then I left some sticking up, which mashed together when I put the cap on. Didn't leak a drop.
