Got to thinking more about those springs. I am wondering if at some point during cost cutting design planning the thought was to cut production costs by substituting wire springs for the spring steel used for the straps? This assumes the straps are spring steel. As I recall they seemed like they might be when I worked on the installation for Sparky.
Another possibility could be it was related to post war steel supply shortages?
