First we need to know how many wires go to the switch on the steering column. If possible, knowing what brand the switch is would help also. It seems pretty obvious that the indicator light is wired to the light switch, instead of the P (pilot) terminal of the flasher. You need a 3-terminal flasher that has the P terminal as well as input and output terminals.
