Not to hijack the thread, but I have encountered the same issue with my '50 Chev, 216, with 6 volt system. New coils seem to be just a skosh fatter than they were back in the day. Got creative and stretched the coil bracket enough to go around the new coil, bent the mounting legs to lay flat against the head, and found an all-thread machine screw that was long enough to go through the new positioning of the bracket. Really don't think I needed the screw, because the bracket is so tight on the coil.
