The first stovebolt hydraulic lifters came in the Powerglide transmission equipped cars with a spray-oiler 235 in 1950. That same basic lifter design was used through 1962 on some engines. The design of hydraulics was very primitive back then, with a bad habit of leaking down and rattling, especially on a cold start. About the only worse ones I can think of were used in the V-12 Lincoln Zephyr. Insisting on using a lifter designed 75 years ago just doesn't make good nonsense.
