I just started to use U shaped crimp connectors, that look like factory made crimps. Once sleeved with heat shrink they are very thin. You need crimpers specifically made for these connectors and it took a bit of a learning curve before I consistently got good crimps. I believe they are superior to barrel crimps as they crimp, not only the bare wire, but the cable too. I also bought ring and spade terminals for my upcoming rewiring job.
