Kevin, the chain and jack method I use is done on the truck, with a magnetic caster/camber gauge attached to the hub. I learned that procedure in the late 1950s from my father's business partner who did all the wheel alignment and frame straightening for their shop. All the bending is done outboard of the spring seat. With the proper fixtures, it's also possible to twist the axle for caster correction on one side.
