Chevy used the "baby chicken" theory with those short braided ground straps- - - -"CHEEP- - - -CHEEP- - - -CHEEP!" It was a lot less expensive on the assembly line that way. Anytime another connection is added into a heavy current circuit there's a potential for loose connections or corrosion to happen. If you're building a "numbers-correct" show truck stick with the original stuff. Otherwise, run a piece of #0 welding cable for a ground from the battery to the engine block or the bell housing to carry starter current, and use smaller grounds to the body and frame for lights, ignition, generator/alternator, etc.
