Wouldn't the same principal apply to any tool? For example if all saw guards are in place, there should be no way you could physically get your fingers anywhere close to the blade on a tablesaw.
Used correctly every tool is safe. Short cuts, failure to pay attention, removal of fences, guards, etc can cause issues as can not paying attention to flaws in the wood you're cutting, drilling etc.
