I have the same helmet. I've found that it does not seem to respond to bright light as much as a change in light. So, for example, if you keep it aimed sun, it won't stay dark, but if you waive your hand in front of the lense, it will darken momentarily. I've used the helmet quite a few times now and I really like it. It makes finding the bead much easier.
