Looks like the spring should work. Maybe it’s the picture angle, but it doesn’t look like the hook pulls the lever straight. Is that the design for your year. Mine has a funny loop that goes over the lever with a double nutted adjusting bolt. Crazy that some engineer came up with that design in 37. I don’t see any way to adjust tension on your spring. Maybe it’s fine as is. I see a couple of bolt holes in the block to run strap or small angle iron to the frame
