Craig, snapshot below is from the 1929-57 Chevy Master Parts book with dimensions and part detail info. A replacement cable assembly in the 68-70"length range will fit his needs. Lots of choices out there, from plastic cable housing to steel as you mentioned. If he wants "original appearance" go with the steel housing. Otherwise the others should prove sufficient for regular use. (Just my opinion)

Classic Parts offers a Steel housing cable assy for reasonable money, or a Plastic housing cable assy for less money. Both 70" length.
