Threading on a lathe started long before quick change gear box's were around. I’ve threaded on lathes that required you to change the gearing in the box manually, but it still did the job. Not that hard, only took a little more setup time.

If that lathe was my only option, I would grab it in a heartbeat and adapt it to my needs.
