Those aerosol cans of whatever cleaning products you choose will make your bank account need CPR. Get a hand-pumped garden sprayer and some Trisodium Phosphate powder from the local big box hardware store. Mix up a strong solution of TSP and water, spray it onto a warm engine, and follow up a few minutes later with a high pressure flush with a garden hose or a pressure washer. The stuff is designed to lift oil stains from concrete- - - -it does a really good job of cleaning up an engine. Walk away from the job for a while before trying to start the engine, to let any residual water on electrical components evaporate- - - - -about a six pack's worth of time works well for me!
