It looks like the screws holding the assembly into the casing from the back fell out, allowing the speedo assembly to fall into the lower part of the casing. But the screws holding that small center piece around the needle must have also fell out.
Have you been driving down washboard roads at high speeds Otto? You might want to check other screws for tightness as well. wink
