Some pullers bottom out in the balancer bore, and they're fighting a lost cause. Find a deep socket that will slide through the center hole of the balancer, and push on it with the puller jackscrew. I've seen several pullers damaged and/or balancers destroyed by that problem. I've used the same "crowfoot" puller for over 30 years, and it hasn't failed me yet.
