The earlier version of the metal windlace retainer (pre-'49 or '50. I don't recall when the change was made), can be used to hold down the carpet or rubber mat without having to remove any screws since those retainers screw into the side of the rocker panel instead of the top like yours do. Once you screw the later model retainers in place, you can pry up on the inboard edge with a pry bar to give you enough clearance to tuck the mat or carpet under it. They were not designed for tucking the mat under them, but it can be done if you want to.
