Sounds like a candidate for Bon Ami.
Dad had bought a new D6 Cat back in '48 that burned oil excessively. The Caterpillar rep came to the field in a business suit and sprinkled Bon Ami into the intake with 2 fingers several times then let the engine run for about 10 minutes. Told Dad to "Shut her down and change the oil." It never burned another quart of oil after that.
The Bon Ami scored the cylinder walls just enough for the rings to seat. That D6 was still pushing earth when he sold it in '98.
Gotta be Bon Ami, it's a finer grit than Comet or Ajax and only works on new or newly rebuilt engines.
