Creating a little leakage through the lifter to purge trapped air has been done on every engine since then, no matter what the manufacturer. Yes, I have done it, but not on a stovebolt Chevy, since nobody could chase me fast enough to give me a set of hydraulic lifters for a stovebolt engine.
