Something similar happened at a tire shop where I was working, one of the techs accidentally put a 16" tire onto a 16.5" rim. When he aired it up, thankfully still on the machine so it couldn't jump around, it broke the bead of the tire with a terrific BANG. Never before or since seen the actual steel bead of a tire break, but thankfully no one was injured. Scared the poor guy half to death!
