Mike,
Yes, the vacuum advance was disconnected. Also, new plugs,wires,points, basically anything to do with ignition. We even switched carburetors with one for a 261 and checked compression. Fuel pressure is also good. Engine still breaks up at higher RPMs. This weekend, I will swap out the distributor with the rebuilt one.
