I once did it myself over 30 years ago - never again.
I have trained an ex-Marine friend to help as a 4-speed raiser/lowerer. No matter how you raise or lower the transmission, you might want to get two long bolts the same size as the mounting bolts; cut off the bolts heads; and, screw them into the top mounting holes in the clutch housing, to serve as pilot bolts. This has worked quite well for me (in recent years).
