A quick check for exhaust problems is a vacuum gauge, connected to the windshield wiper port, not the distributor vacuum. If the vacuum drops to virtually nothing even with slight throttle opening, there's most likely exhaust problems. Loosen the exhaust pipe at the manifold and see if the performance improves.
