I'm not sure I understand. Years ago I read that (for passenger cars) tread width could be as much as two inches wider than the rim without sidewall flex issues. On an old dualie, how much space is there between the the inner sidewalls of the tires? I assume that it would be a bad thing if the sidewalls rubbed together.
What about one piece rims that are larger than 22.5 inches? Since most of the rear end ratios are pretty steep I would think that a larger diameter tire would help cruising speed a little. Of course there is the bolt pattern issue.
