I recommend you consider the option Dave pointed out and that is to install a voltage reducer into the hot wire going to the fuel gauge . I don't see what year/ model truck you have but if it's original wiring , it would be a pink wire running from the ignition switch to the fuel gauge. Splice the voltage regulator into that wire and you should be good to go.
