One advantage to fabricating the adjustable drag link is that it makes it easier to "center point" the steering gear to minimize wander when the truck is tracking straight down the road. There's a fairly narrow area of the worm and sector gear relationship that can be adjusted for zero clearance. If any other steering parts have a little wear, it's impossible to find the center point, and there will be a little slack in the steering.
