Try checking for a short inside the distributor. I once helped a guy on the side of the road who had a jeep that quit on him. When i pulled the distributor cap, I saw that the wire from the terminal to the points was chafed and grounding. Moved it away from ground and he was back on the road. The '40's distributor probably doesn't have a wire to the points, but something might be grounding out.
