People forget that the early GM designed trucks were designed to do real work. Dirt was expected. A great many roads at that time were dirt. Today we are spoiled with things like environment controlled cabins. Dirt roads are avoided because it might make those rugged-looking hard to clean low-profile wheels dusty.
