I think you are right. What I don't understand is how does the starter start turning before the pinion is extended into the ring gear. Bench testing showed no electrical contact until the button is almost fully depressed at which time the pinion is fully extended. I'll look at that more tomorrow and this time restrict the pinion from fully extending.
