You'll only regret fully welding it if you have to remove it!
On my '55, they welded it straight under the axles. Worked great until you had to change a tire and they had to cut my exhaust!
I'm going to do my own exhaust and will be using v-bands for a couple strategic breaks so I can easily maintain my truck for years to come.
