Here's where it started with a post by Tim Lederman in the Driveline forum. From there, the Stovebolt Collective rolled in.
I see that there is now a 200 Private Message limit. I am way over the limit.
I do not see a way to delete old messages - you get to delete all or none. I would like to keep the most recent 100 messages. Until I figure out how to do that, I will not be able to receive private messages.
At one point, Tim had 10,000 PMs. After a few swipes, using Rustoholic guidance below, he got it to a manageable 1400. Then he went for the gusto, realizing they were mostly old news by that time.
