The universal ball joint can wear. It needs to be smooth without ridges (wear path).
If there are ridges, there may be gaps in the surface that the seal cannot seal.
The ball must move with movement of the rear axle so there is a "fine line" between having a good seal and having movement.
Add or remove seals as needed.
