We trim the hole to an even rectangle, fit radio to replacement, and then Panel Bond the replacement to the underside of dash. The bond sets up overnight and no side effects like from welding. I like to "French" a modern radio into an old dash as it does not protrude above the dash and has a smooth look to it. A pic of a 49 3100 with a Frenched radio. All repairs should be scheduled before build completed or plan on painting entire dash.
