The oil filter (canister and cartridge) was an option you could purchase from the factory or later at the dealership.
Options were 1 quart (cars and trucks) and 2 quarts (big trucks).

For the engine only, 5-1/2 quarts for dry (no oil in pump etc.) and 5 quarts for refill:

After the oil and filter change or first filling, you prefill the canister to the amount required by the type canister.
