There IS a 4.10 gear set available for the HO52/72. I forget what years, but something like a 66 K20 I think. I found a whole axle through my connections for $100 and yanked the center section to put in my truck's axle. If all you want is a 4.10, I'd do that long before swapping in some other axle. Now if you want something in the 3.xx range, then yes, you must swap to something else.
